GBM #3: Simula ng Sumayaw!

This GBM, we showcased the vibrant traditional dances of the Philippines in our dance workshop! Besides just learning the moves, it was also a nice way to bring friends together and scout out potential performers who are thinking of dancing for our main event, Barangay! 💃 🌺

Genboard was split into five groups and rotated between each dance. Tinikling, act led by Caleb and Jarrell, is where dancers had to time their steps between bamboo poles that rhythmically clapped together—it was very fun and exhilarating! Maglalatik, act led by Dylan, is a lively dance using coconut shells slapped against the dancers’ bodies in rhythm to simulate a musical battle. Bulaklakan, act led by MJ, is more of a light and elegant dance where dancers with flower garlands gently raised and waved around in a majestic manner. Cariñosa, act led by Des with help from Mia, is a more charming and romantic courtship dance involving partners. Last but not least, our newly added Pandanggo sa Ilaw, act led by Sammi! This performance—meaning “dance of lights”—involves balancing candles or oil lamps on each hand and moving with beautiful ease. A big salamat to our act leaders! They guided us through each dance, keeping everyone hyped and making this dance workshop one to enjoy. Hopefully most of you are considering to join as a performer for our upcoming event Barangay ooohh 👀. Regardless, getting in touch with Filipino culture and friends was fun as always, next week ulit! 👪 ✨
